China has developed a new supercomputer, which, by all appearances, is currently the most powerful on the planet. It is called Sunway TaihuLight, and it replaced another Chinese supercomputer in the world leaderboard, which is now in second place. Yes, the previous leader among supercomputers was also created in China, but it was equipped with processors of American company Intel, while the newcomer was created using the latest chips developed in China, residents of the Middle Kingdom can now rightfully be proud of the first domestic supercomputer.
The supercomputer has a performance of 93 petaflops, which means it can perform 93 quadrillion calculations per second, and the 10.65 million cores of the Chinese wonder of technology make the Titan system of the Cray Xk7, the most powerful supercomputer in the United States, which has only 560,000 cores, feel awkward. However, the Titan is in third place in a ranking that lists as many as 500 supercomputers from around the world. Nevertheless, the brand new Sunway TaihuLight produces as much as 16% of their total power. Despite its impressive capabilities, the computer also consumes little power. Usually a lot of power is consumed by RAM, but the TaihuLight uses significantly less RAM than its counterparts.
Simultaneously with the appearance of TaihuLight, China has taken the lead in the number of supercomputers. China has 167 of them, while the U.S. has 165 computers indicated in the rating.
