Errors Are Best When Emailed… Said Nobody Ever.

Email was a broken paradigm before you started supporting 20 applications that send you a gentle reminder every time someone fat fingers a form value. And now? It's hell. Email as an exception log is one of the worst things you can do to yourself as a developer. On a good day it crowds your inbox and puts a damper on your productivity. On a bad day it makes you wish you could monetize punching yourself in the face instead. But what choice do you have?!

Exception Logging (a completely separate tool from your bug database like Jira, or Bugzilla) is a real thing, and helps you make informed decisions about which bugs are the most important, most frequent, and so on, so that you can decide what to fix first, and how soon it needs to be fixed... all while keeping your inbox clear so you don't miss that notification of free cupcakes in the break room.

In the ColdFusion community we have two popular options: BugLogHQ and Hoth. In this session I'll show you what both of them look like and how to use them to your benefit. Come to this session. Your inbox will thank you.

5 Things people will learn:

  1. There are multiple alternatives to emailing yourself every error from your web app, and they're awesome.
  2. How to setup & use BugLogHQ
  3. How to setup & use Hoth
  4. It doesn't have to stop here, you can build on top of these products to customize reporting and notification (and how I have done so)
  5. Why tabs are superior to spaces
